From the 2001 Prolaser Newsletter:
Whether during a period of high employment, when staff may move to gain improved remuneration or benefits, or during periods of recession when staff are lost due to voluntary redundancy or early retirement, a company's knowledge and expertise is at risk of being lost. Many companies fail to recognise the importance of retaining key skills and the benefits of retraining at regular intervals. In one extreme example of this, experienced directly by ourselves, some twenty employees were trained to maintain a number of laser processing machines. However, after just three months, ten of the group had left the company (for a variety of reasons) and six of the group were moved to other departments. Of the remaining four, two were allocated to the night shift, one was allocated to other important work and demarcation issues prevented the remaining person from working on the machines. The result was major disruption to production.
Laser safety and laser processing are specialist subjects and knowledge of them within an organisation will generally be held by only a few. One of the benefits of in-house laser safety training in this regard is that it is cost effective to train many simultaneously with a minimum loss of employee time. Modern management strategies see the creation of a supportive but demanding culture as part of the solution to retaining key skills. Continual professional development has an important part to play in maintaining and improving staff motivation and performance and there is no better subject than lasers to stimulate interest and encourage learning.
Pro Laser Consultants provide focused training for general safety and specific laser safety, ranging from awareness training to in-depth Laser Safety Officer training. We can also act as the company Laser Protection Advisor to deal with laser safety issues as they arise.
